Nike Flyknit Puzzle Box

Client: Nike/The THING Quarterly

Produced as a limited edition of 144 boxes, this collaboration with artist Ryan Gander, The THING Quarterly, and Nike consists of a shoebox elevated to art piece. Inlaid with walnut, cherry, elm and birch wood, it takes the form of a Japanese puzzle box, requiring the recipient to open latches in a specific sequence to unlock the shoes inside. Gander derived the box's exterior markings from the Flyknit fabric design, which uses a digital 3D loom and results in a flexible, strong, and virtually seamless shoe. We worked with the team in the production of the boxes; design of the exterior packaging; a small book that accompanies the project; and a stitch-sealed "failsafe," which provides the solution to the puzzle if needed.
